The artist collective “Chto Delat?” (“What is to be done”), based in Saint Petersburg (Russia), can be considered as one of the most transmedially and politically working one in Russia. Since 2003, the year of foundation, the collective has been becoming a veritably interdisciplinary artistic “think-tank”, consisting of artists, philosophers, art critics, dancers, writers and political activists. Besides their artistic projects, mostly produced by media of video, (theatre) performance, graphics and installation, they initiated 2013 the so called “School for Engaged Art” (a Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung project), an independent platform for development of new forms of artistic collaborations and strategies. They have also been publishing a thematic bilingual newspaper on current artistic discourse in the collective (in Russian and English), distributed for free and also available online.
In their artistic practice they often refer to the Brechtian conception of a “Lehrstück” (“teaching play”), and interrogate “with the goal of merging political theory, art, and activism” about the transformation of (artistic) labour, the notion of monumentality and modern(ist) monument, politics of memory and commemoration, sociopolitical consciousness in times of repression of civil rights and the inner dynamics of communities. Chto Delat? is a participant of numerous international art exhibitions, biennials, documentary and theater festivals. They collaborated among others with Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin, DE), Berliner Festspiele (DE), Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven, NL), Arsenale (Kyiv, UA) etc. In Berlin they are represented by the KOW Gallery.
The artist Dmitry Vilensky will be present.
